For 2 months in the summer of 2015, Oli Broadhead and Angus Walker trekked over 600 miles east to west across southern India from the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea. They walked 20 miles a day across the diverse landscapes of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala. Oli and Angus are currently students so their budget was low and their kit minimal. In February 2016, 25-year-old Ash Dykes became the first person to traverse the length of Madagascar through its interior. It was an adventure spanning 155 days and 1,600 miles during which Ash summited eight of the highest mountains on the island. Madagascar’s land area is roughly 2.5 times larger than the UK and provides plenty of challenges from thick jungle to crocodile infested river crossings to bandits, military conflicts and the opportunity to contract the deadliest strain of malaria. Kristin Gates was the youngest woman to hike the US Triple Crown, the first person to hike the completed 800 mile Arizona Trail, and the first woman to solo traverse Alaska’s Brooks Range. After 700 miles of bushwhacking and 300 miles of packrafting for 51 days on the Brooks Range, Kristin spent the next summer solo kayaking the 2,000 mile Yukon river from its headwaters to the Bearing Sea. Along with teammate Leon McCarron, the two alternated pulling a 2-wheeled cart containing their supplies. At the China border, they ditched their conspicuous cart in favor of heavy rucksacks and continued south as they struggled with the landscape, the language, the police, and each other all the while filming the adventure which became a 4-part National Geographic television series. Into the Empty Quarter is an adventure film that follows Leon McCarron’s journey through a vast region of the Arabian Desert. Their adventure was inspired by the British explorer Wilfred Thesiger who wrote about his crossing of the desert in the book Arabian Sands.
